Message for U.S. Citizens:  Influenza A (H1N1) in Venezuela

This message alerts U.S. citizens to the latest information regarding human cases of Influenza A (H1N1) in Venezuela (commonly known as swine flu).  To date and according to media reports, 250 people have been infected with the virus and 17 people have died as a result of contracting Influenza A (H1N1).  Most of the cases have been reported in seven Venezuelan states, with the highest number being reported in Merida, a border state with Colombia.
 
Vaccinations are hard to find, and a new batch may not be available until September.  
 
For further information about Influenza A (H1N1), including steps you can take to stay healthy, please consult the U.S. Centers for Disease Control website athttp://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/disease/index.htm.
 
U.S. citizens in Venezuela are encouraged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP).  By enrolling, U.S. citizens gain access to vital security information and enable the Embassy to contact them in case of emergency.
